Epson Under 18 Tournament

Epson Under 18 Tournament.

On Sunday the 26th of November 2006, Jeremy Hanna went to compete in the final of a 5 tournament series known as the Epson Under18s. The series runs throughout the year all over New Zealand - This year the final was held at the Auckland Netball Centre in Counties Manukau. Throughout the year, participants accumulate points by winning medals in sparring, patterns or special technique; 3 points for a gold medal, 2 points for a silver, and 1 point for a bronze. At the end of the series, the competitor with the most points is presented with a trophy, and the title of best junior.

Having only competed in one other tournament in the series this year, Jeremy was unable to catch up to the leading point scorer and was out of the running for the trophy.

First event for the day was patterns – due to a low number of under 18 II dan black belts, the patterns division was merged so that I dan and II dan compete in the same division. Jeremy had the bye to the second round of the draw and the following two wins lead him to the gold medal.
Next up was sparring – In the first round this time Jeremy was matched up against Shane Black; this particular match-up always results in a closely contested bout; however the decision generally goes against Jeremy. The first 2 minutes seemed to go to Shane, and, although the second round seemed to go a bit better for Jeremy, it looked as though once again the bout would go to his opponent. The result after the first 2 rounds was a draw – the competitors would now go one further round before the winner was declared. At the end of the round, again it seemed that Shane had secured the win. But once more the judges surprised us with a draw. This meant that the rules now changed to first point, otherwise known as sudden death.

After a number of inconclusive flurries – Jeremy shoots a well placed side kick under the guard of his opponent for the win.
Another two wins secures the sparring gold for Jeremy.
Finally specialty is underway, the last event of the day – Jeremy hits all three; high, turning and overhead (which, curiously had to be performed with scissor action), and so does Shane. Resulting in a play playoff for gold – tiebreak is the overhead, Shane hits and Jeremy misses – Silver for Jeremy.

Impact medal count: 2 x Gold, 1 x Silver
